Fund Water Rangers

Water Rangers is a not-for-profit, social enterprise.

We create accessible water-quality monitoring tools and data systems so that communities have a voice in protecting their waterways. We are a small, mighty team doing great work in these key areas: the development of water quality testkits for fresh and marine water, creation and management of water data management tools, and development and delivery of our curated programs, which support community based water monitoring and environmental stewardship.

Every year we raise the bar on the depth and breadth of our impact. Every year we get better. We have to, because every year more people are asking “What can I do to help?” and we’ve undertaken the mission to ensure they have answers.

We rely on grants, sponsorships, and donations, as well as the sale of our testkits to keep us going. Funds go directly to making sure communities, schools, researchers, and governments are equipped with knowledge and tools to make impactful and widespread contributions to big problems.

There are several key ways you can fund Water Rangers, and each dollar goes to ensuring every community has the tools they need to take care of every lake, river, or stream.

These are our top priorities where your funds will have the biggest impact.

1. Donate to support ongoing Water Rangers water testkit development

Our mission is to ensure that every lake, river, stream, and sea has enough data to know whether or not they are healthy. Our testkits and their components are constantly being tested to make them easier to use and so we can see if new parameters match our high standards for accuracy, affordability, and user-friendliness.

These efforts cost at least $20,000 per year in research and development costs. Contact us if you’re interested in sponsoring our research for testkits.

2. Sponsor our Water Rangers field data management tools

Water Rangers not only provides water monitoring testkits that are accessible, affordable, and easy to use. We also have a field app for our volunteers to easily collect their water quality test results, and a data platform for sharing and accessing water quality test results. Our technology tools need ongoing maintenance as well as new features that make them even more helpful for community groups’ data management needs. A lot of that work happens behind the scenes, ensuring we’re following best-practices for data standards, too.

These efforts cost at least $50,000 per year in servers, technical improvements, and maintenance. Contact us if you’re interested in sponsoring our technology.

3. Sponsor our monitoring program with fresh or marine water testkits

When it comes to the fight for clean water, we are all in this together. One of the most impactful ways you can help is by sponsoring testkits for a monitoring program or community. Here are a few featured programs that are in need of testkits. They are trusted charitable partners with missions we love! Please specify the program you’d like to support in your payment or email us so we can help coordinate.

Water First runs an education program for Indigenous youth that facilitates hands-on learning through water science workshops, getting youth out on the land to complete environmental restoration projects of local significance. We’re hoping to help WaterFirst raise $10,000 for supplies. You can sponsor an educational water quality testkit for $550, resupplies for a testkit for $100, or support all supplies for an entire program for $2,500. Learn more and donate

Riparia connects young women and science on the water. With our team of guides, scientists, and Indigenous Knowledge Keepers, participants learn and experience different ways of doing science, thinking about water, and learning from our environment. Riparia uses our testkits on their excursions and we’d love to raise $5,000 for them. Those funds will supply them with our Compact testkits, allowing the participants to continue testing. Each costs $125. Learn more and donate
We’re working with Canadian Freshwater Alliance to equip Lake Erie Guardians with testkits. Lake Erie is so beautiful and it needs all of our help to get healthy! Your donations to the Canadian Freshwater Alliance will mean that we can support this enthusiastic community in long-term water monitoring. $100 would restock a testkits for next year. $345 would equip a new Guardian. Donate now!

If you have other ideas on how you can support groups like these, please contact us.

Looking to apply for funding for our testkits?

As a non-profit, we know how daunting fundraising can be for our partners. That’s why we put together this helpful guide for those wanting to use our kits in their programming, but who need to access external funding to do so.

4. Shop Water Rangers’ store and get sampling

One of the most powerful contributions you can make is to get sampling. Water Rangers empowers people to understand and care for their waterways. We need more data about our lakes, rivers, streams, and oceans. By learning to sample and heading out to the field, you are helping to ensure every lake, river, or stream has enough data to know whether or not they are healthy.

5. Become an Ambassador

If your group already uses Water Rangers equipment and is looking to help promote us in your region, you can also become a Water Rangers Ambassador. As you share with more people, we share proceeds as a way to ‘grow the flow’ of people water testing and to give back to our community.
